about us

Superior service, personalized attention

Our adventure began in May of 2019 when, on a whim, we signed up as vendors for the Hastings-on-Hudson arts & crafts street fair. Harry made terrariums and succulent arrangements, and he collected moss and Japanese Maples in the woods the week before the event. I created an Instagram account and promoted our small plant pop-up within our community of friends. The day of the street fair, we didn’t know what to expect. We arrived too early and had to wait for the street to be blocked off for vendors. Our truck bed was full of inventory, 4 metal shelves, a couple apple boxes and a tiny chalk board sign. I helped to manage the booth while half-supervising our three young children. First hour—no sales. But then, passersby stopped and lingered, curious about our plants, and word spread down the street. We sold out and made $400 over 6 hours. Needless to say, that was the day Mossy Fern was born!

We continued to “pop-up” at local businesses in the Rivertowns, vend at street fairs and joined the Farmer’s Market circuit. We met and spoke to customers, learning that there was great interest in houseplants, specifically exotic ones. We started to stock tropical and desert plants, and customer demand rapidly increased. As we built a devoted following, a brick and mortar shop became a necessity. So, within the first 90 days of business—in August 2019—we opened Mossy Fern Boutique Garden Center & Floral Shop in Hastings at the Moviehouse Mews, space #4.

The local community welcomed us with open arms and our first few months of business were full of much ado and fun. We held a “green carpet” grand opening, participated in town and chamber events and decorated our shop for Halloween. We were interviewed and appeared in multiple local media outlets. To our surprise, Westchester Magazine featured us as best new retail shop in their December issue! Throughout this excitement, we continued to set up booths at the farmer’s markets. Customers would line up and guard the plants that they hoped to buy.
Since our humble beginnings, we have added seasonal plants, perennials, annuals, soil, garden tools, herbs and seeds to our inventory.

Additionally, we now offer landscape design and installation services for both residential and commercial properties in the greater Westchester area.

From here, our story has yet to be written. But, we know our community is supportive and we will continue to give back. Stay tuned!
